Can police officers and other security officers vote?

Constitution of Kenya; National Police Service Act · sources read 4 Oct 2026

Yes. Police officers, like every adult citizen, have the right to register as voters and vote by secret ballot, and the National Police Service Act says an officer cannot be barred from voting. At work, though, police and other security officers must stay politically neutral.

Where
Register and vote through the IEBC (iebc.or.ke), like any other citizen.

Steps

  1. Register as a voter with the IEBC, just like any other adult citizen.
  2. Vote by secret ballot in any election or referendum.
  3. At work, stay neutral: don't act in a partisan way or push any party's interests.

Watch out

  • The KDF, the National Intelligence Service and the National Police Service, and every member of them, must not act in a partisan manner or further the interests of a political party or cause.
  • Police officers' freedom of association is limited: they may not join or take part in associations other than those the National Police Service Act allows.

Who this covers

  • Every adult Kenyan citizen, including members of the security services.
  • Police officers: the law says an officer may not be barred from voting in any election they have a right to vote in.
