Civil service job groups and salary scales

Civil service pay depends on your grade, now written as a CSG number next to the old job group letter. 2026 PSC adverts list basic pay of KSh 36,200 for CSG 11 (Job Group J), KSh 43,200 for CSG 10 (K) and KSh 59,010 to 103,440 for CSG 8 (N), plus house and commuter allowances.

Steps
- Find your grade. Adverts show the CSG number with the old job group, e.g. CSG 11 = Job Group J, CSG 10 = K, CSG 8 = N.
- Read the pay in the PSC advert for that grade. Each advert lists the basic salary or scale, house allowance and commuter allowance.
- To apply for a post, apply online on the PSC website or the jobs portal (psckjobs.go.ke).
Watch out
- A lower CSG number means a more senior job: CSG 5 is Director, CSG 7 is Assistant Director.
- Basic salary is only part of the pay. House allowance changes with where you are posted, so two officers in the same grade can take home different amounts.
- Many higher-grade adverts are promotions open only to people already in the public service.
