Farm a plot in a KFS forest plantation (PELIS)
Kenya Forest Service · sources read 2 Oct 2026
Plots in public forest plantations (PELIS) are farmed through your local Community Forest Association (CFA), which needs a management agreement with KFS. Join the CFA for your forest and ask the KFS conservancy office about PELIS plots there.
- Fee
- We couldn't confirm a fee from the official page. Check it there before you pay.
- Where
- Through your local Community Forest Association and the KFS conservancy office or forest station for your area
Steps
- Join the Community Forest Association (CFA) for the forest near you. A CFA is a registered group of local people that works with KFS to manage the forest.
- If the CFA has no agreement yet, it applies to KFS to take part in managing the forest, with its members list, constitution and the forest area it wants.
- Plantation farming (non-resident cultivation) is one of the user rights KFS can give the CFA in its management agreement. Plots are shared out through the CFA.
- To find out about PELIS in your forest, contact the KFS conservancy office for your region (for example Nairobi, Central Highlands, Mau, North Rift, Western or Coast).
Watch out
- Never clear or farm land in a public forest on your own. Without a KFS licence, permit or management agreement it is an offence.
- PELIS is non-resident farming: you farm the plot but you don't live in the forest.
- PELIS is run by KFS's plantation division, which organises tree planting in plantations through the programme.
Who can apply
- Local people who are members of a registered Community Forest Association for the forest.
