Kenya Maritime Authority · sources read 3 Oct 2026
Check KMA's list of approved maritime training institutions and make sure the school is approved for the exact course you want. Approval is given course by course.
- Fee
- We couldn't confirm a fee from the official page. Check it there before you pay.
- Where
- Approved schools are in Mombasa, Mtwapa, Watamu, Malindi, Kisumu, Nairobi, Juja and Embu. KMA's list is on its MET Institutions page; KMA head office is at Bahari Towers, Mbaraki Road, Mombasa.
What you need
- To get a seafarer's discharge book (CDC) later, you need valid Basic STCW certificates from your training
Steps
- Download KMA's list of approved maritime education and training institutions from its MET Institutions page.
- Find the school and read its approved courses. Only pay for a course that is listed against that school.
- Going to sea for the first time? Start with the basic safety (STCW) courses, because you need those certificates to get a CDC.
- When you pass, an approved school can issue your certificate of proficiency on KMA's behalf.
Watch out
- A school approved for one course is not automatically approved for others. Each course is approved separately.
- A school's approval lasts four years and must be renewed after a KMA inspection.
- The list changes. The current one is Revision 10 (August 2026), so check again before you pay fees.
