What you need

  • Acknowledgement of Birth Notification (ABN) from the hospital or place of birth
  • The child's date of birth, the mother's name and the place of birth
  • If the ABN is lost: proof of the ABN number from the place of birth
  • Late registration: filled late registration forms
  • Late registration: clinic or antenatal register
  • Late registration: parents' ID cards
  • Late registration: school leaving certificate or school letter, or ID card if the applicant is over 18

Steps

  1. Keep the Acknowledgement of Birth Notification (ABN) you got from the hospital or place of birth. You need its number to apply.
  2. Apply on the eCitizen civil registration portal, or visit a sub-county civil registration office or a Huduma Centre.
  3. Pay KSh 200 for the certificate.
  4. If the birth was never registered within six months, apply for late registration instead: fill the late registration forms, bring the supporting documents, and pay KSh 500 plus KSh 200 for the certificate.

Watch out

  • Born at home or outside a hospital? Start at the local Assistant Chief's office where the child was born.
  • Want to change the name on the birth certificate? You only have two years to do it.
  • Adding the child's name later or correcting details in the birth register costs an extra KSh 1,000.

Who can apply

  • Parents or guardians, individuals applying for themselves, and children's homes
  • Late registration is for births not registered within six months of the date of birth
