Get a Certificate of No Impediment to marry abroad

Apply on eCitizen with certified copies of your passport and birth certificate and your fiancé(e)'s passport. Your notice is displayed for 10 days at the Registrar's office, and once approved you pay KSh 10,000.

What you need
- Certified copy of your passport
- Certified copy of your birth certificate
- Colour passport-size photos, one each
- Certified copy of your fiancé(e)'s passport
- If widowed: copy of the death certificate
- If divorced: copy of the Decree Absolute
- A sworn affidavit if the death certificate or divorce decree is more than 2 years old
Steps
- Get your documents certified at the Registrar of Marriages, a Kenyan embassy or high commission, or a notary public if you are outside Kenya.
- Fill in the online application on eCitizen and upload the certified documents.
- Your application is displayed for 10 days at the Registrar's office nearest to where you last lived in Kenya.
- Once approved, you get a notice to pay KSh 10,000 on eCitizen.
Watch out
- Your names must be the same, in the same order, on your birth certificate and your ID or passport. Fix any mismatch before you apply.
- If you apply through a Kenyan embassy, it sends the application to Nairobi for processing, so allow extra time.
Who can apply
- Kenyan citizens who want to marry outside Kenya, to a Kenyan or a foreigner. It confirms you have no existing marriage record.
