Get a free HIV test, PrEP or HIV treatment

Walk into any public health facility and ask for an HIV test. It is free and you get the result in about 15 minutes; if you are at risk you can ask for PrEP, and if you test positive they start you on ARVs.

Steps
- Go to a public health facility and ask for an HIV test. The test is free and confidential.
- If you test negative but are at ongoing risk, ask about PrEP. The twice-a-year PrEP injection is free at selected facilities in Nairobi and other counties.
- If you test positive, the health worker will counsel you, do any needed lab tests and start you on ARVs.
- Take your ARVs every day. Don't skip doses or share them.
Watch out
- A very recent infection may not show yet. HIV can take up to 3 months to show on a test, so you may be asked to retest.
- After sexual violence, go to the nearest health facility right away. Care for sexual violence is free in all public hospitals.
- The PrEP injection does not protect against other STIs or prevent pregnancy.
Who can apply
- Anyone can test. If you are over 18, you don't need permission from anyone, not even your partner.
- If you are sexually active, test regularly, even if you use condoms.
- PrEP is for people at substantial risk of getting HIV.
