Get a Kakamega County food handler's health certificate and food hygiene licence

Each food handler in Kakamega County needs a food handler's health certificate, which costs KSh 1,000. The food business itself also needs a food hygiene licence from the county's public health office, priced by business type and area, for example KSh 2,500 to KSh 3,500 for an eating house.

- Go to the county's Department of Health Services (Public Health) to get a food handler's health certificate for each person who handles food.
- Pay KSh 1,000 per food handler's certificate.
- Get the food hygiene licence for the business. The fee depends on the type of business and whether it is in a rural, urban or municipality area.
Watch out
- If public health officers close your premises, a re-inspection to reopen costs KSh 2,000.
- A restaurant pays more than an eating house: KSh 3,500 in rural areas and KSh 5,000 in a municipality.
