Go to CA

What you need

  • Filled Numbering Application Form (CA/F/LCS/NRA1.1), for numbers from CA
  • A tariff guide for the services you will run on the number
  • Letters or licences from other regulators where needed (for example CBK, or GRA for betting)

Steps

  1. For an SMS short code (4 to 6 digits starting with 2 to 8), ask a mobile operator, or a licensed premium or content service provider, to allocate one.
  2. Before you sign up, check that the provider has a valid compliance certificate from CA.
  3. For a code starting with 1 or 9 (customer care or emergency) or other numbers, a licensed operator fills the Numbering Application Form and attaches the documents.
  4. Send the completed form to the Director, Licensing, Compliance & Standards, Communications Authority of Kenya, CA Centre, Waiyaki Way, Nairobi.

Watch out

  • Calls and texts to 1xx and 9xx codes must be free for the caller, so you can't charge people on them.
  • You can ask for a preferred code, but CA does not have to give it to you.

Who can apply

  • Licensed operators who need numbers can apply to CA directly.
  • Businesses, other end users and service providers get their numbers from those licensed operators.
  • A firm whose licence is agreed in principle can reserve numbers for up to 3 months.
