What you need

  • The completed KCAA application form for your licence
  • Your knowledge test results slip (for ATC, the Rating Board knowledge test report)
  • An ATO certificate showing you passed an approved training course
  • Two current passport-size photos (full face)
  • A photo ID card or passport
  • Air traffic controllers: a current Class 3 medical certificate. Flight engineers: a valid Class 1 medical.

Steps

  1. Do your training at a KCAA-approved training organisation (ATO) and get its certificate.
  2. Book and pay for your KCAA exams at the Personnel Licensing office. Fees are paid when you book.
  3. Air traffic controllers, flight engineers and ground instructors also pass the English Language Proficiency exam (Level 4 to 6).
  4. Hand in the application form with your test results, ATO certificate, photos, ID and the licence fee.

Watch out

  • Knowledge test results expire: 18 months for flight dispatchers, flight engineers and ground instructors, 2 years for radio operators. Apply before they lapse.
  • Miss a booked exam and you lose the fee. Cancel after the booking date and you only get 50% credit. There are no cash refunds.
  • An ATC licence follows your medical: 2 years if you are under 40, 1 year from 40.

Who can apply

  • Air traffic controller: at least 21, with a current Class 3 medical, an approved training course and at least 3 months' supervised on-the-job control of air traffic.
  • Flight dispatcher (flight operations officer): at least 21, trained at an approved training organisation, with 90 days under a flight operations officer's supervision in the last 6 months.
  • Flight radio telephony operator: at least 17, able to read, speak, write and understand English, and passed the written and oral tests. Pilots, flight dispatchers and flight engineers need it.
  • Flight engineer: at least 18, with a valid Class 1 medical and a pass in the knowledge test.
  • Ground instructor: at least 18, and passed the knowledge test on the fundamentals of instructing.
