- How long
- Within 60 days for an electrical worker licence (contractor licence: within 30 days)
- Where
- Online on the EPRA licensing portal (portal.epra.go.ke). EPRA head office: Eagle Africa Centre, Longonot Road, Upper Hill, Nairobi.
What you need
- Scanned academic certificates and national ID (electrical worker)
- Contractor: valid KRA Tax Compliance Certificate
- Contractor: copy of your electrician's licence (same class as the contractor licence or higher)
- Contractor: signed and notarised electrical worker consent letter
Steps
- Go to the EPRA online licensing portal and create a personal account.
- Fill in the electrical worker (or electrical contractor) application and attach all the required documents.
- Pay the application fee by M-PESA or bank deposit, then submit.
- Electricians sit written and oral interviews on the work allowed for their class. Contractors get a premises inspection of their tools.
Watch out
- Licences are renewed every year. Renewing after 31 March costs an extra 50% penalty.
- Contractors must have the mandatory test instruments (like an insulation resistance tester and earth resistance tester) ready for the licensing inspection.
- The application fee is not the whole cost: a grant fee is also charged for the licence, e.g. KSh 1,000 for C2.
Who can apply
- Electricians with at least an Electrician Wireman Grade II certificate or equivalent. Your starting class (C2, C1, B or A1) depends on your qualifications.
- Electrical contractor licence: a registered business that has a licensed electrician in good standing.
