Where
Online on the EPRA licensing portal (portal.epra.go.ke). EPRA head office: Eagle Africa Centre, Longonot Road, Upper Hill, Nairobi.
Go to EPRA

What you need

  • Certificate of Incorporation or Business Registration Certificate
  • CR12 not older than 1 year
  • Copies of IDs or passports for all directors
  • Valid KRA Tax Compliance Certificate
  • Valid county Single Business Permit for your premises
  • Proof you applied to join an Oil Spill Contingency Group (import, fuel oil, bunkering)
  • Bulk LPG: proof of at least 2,000 metric tons a year throughput, or that you own a cylinder brand

Steps

  1. Go to the licensing portal on the EPRA website and create an account.
  2. Open License Management, choose New Licence Application and pick your category, e.g. Import, Export and Wholesale of Petroleum Products (Except LPG).
  3. Fill in the details, attach the documents for that category and submit.

Watch out

  • EPRA charges no fee for petroleum business licences, so be wary of anyone asking you to pay for one.
  • Jet A1, bitumen, fuel oil, crude oil, bulk LPG and bunkering each have their own licence category, so apply under the one that fits.
  • The licence lasts one year from the date it is issued, so renew it on the portal before it runs out.

Who can apply

  • A registered company or business.
  • To import petroleum products you must show financial capability, for example 6,600 cubic metres a year of wholesale petrol, diesel, Jet A1 or kerosene sales in Kenya (EPRA lists other options).
  • Bulk LPG: you need access to a licensed bulk LPG storage facility.
