Steps

  1. Submit your building plans to the county's Physical Planning office and pay the approval fee. It depends on floor area, building type and whether the site is urban, peri-urban or agricultural.
  2. Structural or civil engineering drawings are charged an extra 25% of the architectural drawings fee.
  3. Pay for public health plan approval: KSh 3,000 for a single-storey structure in town (KSh 2,000 rural), KSh 10,000 up to 5 floors.
  4. During construction the county inspects at different stages, at KSh 2,000 per inspection.
  5. When the building is finished, get an occupation permit: KSh 3,000 for a single house, KSh 5,000 per commercial unit.

Watch out

  • Building first and seeking approval later costs more: regularising plans in urban areas is charged 1.5 times the normal fee.
  • If you haven't built within 2 years, renewing a residential approval costs half the original fee.

Who can apply

  • Anyone putting up a new residential, commercial, office, institutional or industrial building in Bungoma County.
