Interest on court judgments (court rates)

Judiciary of Kenya · sources read 4 Oct 2026

When a court orders money to be paid, the judge sets the interest rate the court thinks reasonable, both from when the case was filed and from judgment until payment. If the decree says nothing about interest after judgment, the law treats it as 6% a year.

Where
The court that heard your case sets interest in its judgment and decree.
Read the law

Steps

  1. Read the judgment and decree: the court sets the interest rate and the dates it runs from, from filing the case to judgment and from judgment to payment.
  2. If the decree is silent on interest after judgment, work it out at 6% a year on the total awarded.

Watch out

  • Interest after judgment runs until payment, unless the court picked an earlier end date.
  • The 6% rate only applies when the decree is silent. If the decree names a rate, that rate applies.
