Inua Jamii cash transfer (older persons 70+, severe disability, orphans)
State Department for Social Protection and Senior Citizen Affairs · sources read 30 Sep 2026
Inua Jamii pays KSh 2,000 a month to Kenyans aged 70+, and to poor households caring for orphans or a person with severe disability. To join, go to your sub-county social protection office or call 1533 (free); once enrolled, you collect the money at an M-Pesa agent with your ID.
- Fee
- We couldn't confirm a fee from the official page. Check it there before you pay.
- Deadline
- You have 6 months after each payment to collect the money.
- Where
- In person with social protection officers at your sub-county office (Social Development, Children Services or County Disability office), or call 1533
What you need
- A valid Kenyan national ID (for an older person, their own ID)
- Your caregiver's valid Kenyan national ID
- A Safaricom line registered in your own name (matching your ID) with M-Pesa active
Steps
- Go to the relevant officers at your sub-county office (social protection) and ask to be registered. Registration is ongoing, not a one-off window.
- Not sure where to go? Call the free Inua Jamii line 1533 (Safaricom, Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm) about registration, entry criteria or payment dates.
- Once enrolled, make sure you have a Safaricom line in your own name and that M-Pesa is active. You can register one at any Safaricom shop or M-Pesa agent.
- To get paid, go in person to the nearest M-Pesa agent with your original ID. The agent checks your fingerprints (or face) and pays you. Count the money before you leave.
Watch out
- 'Inua Jamii Foundation' WhatsApp messages offering money are a scam. Official news only comes from the Ministry; report scams on 1533.
- You don't need a bank account anymore; payments now go through M-Pesa agents.
- A household can only be in one cash transfer programme, though an older person on the 70+ programme can also be a caregiver in another.
Who can apply
- Three groups: older persons aged 70 and above, households caring for a person with severe disability, and households with orphans and vulnerable children.
- Older persons: a Kenyan citizen aged 70 or older with a valid national ID.
- Older persons not getting a pension are given priority.
- Severe disability: a household with a person who needs 24-hour care, not in another cash transfer programme and with no one on a pension. The beneficiary must be Kenyan.
- Orphans and vulnerable children: an extremely poor household where one or more such children live permanently, not getting any other government cash transfer.
- You should have lived in the area for at least 1 year.
- Each beneficiary gets KSh 2,000 per payment.
- Payments have been monthly since July 2023.
