Is there a warranty on car repairs?
Consumer Protection Act · sources read 4 Oct 2026
When a garage repairs your vehicle, the law treats the new or reconditioned parts it fits, and the labour, as guaranteed for at least 90 days or 5,000 km, whichever comes first. A garage also may not charge more for a repair just because an insurance company is paying.
- Deadline
- The warranty lasts at least 90 days or 5,000 km after the repair, whichever comes first.
- Where
- The garage that did the repair first; then the appropriate court
What you need
- The invoice the garage must give you when the repair is done
Steps
- If the repair fails within 90 days or 5,000 km, go back to the garage that did it: the parts and labour are under warranty.
- If the car becomes undrivable or unsafe and it is not reasonable to take it back, you can have it fixed at the closest garage that can do the work.
- Then claim from the original garage the original cost of the repair and reasonable towing charges.
- If the original garage asks, return the faulty parts to it, at its expense.
- If the garage will not pay, you can take the claim to the appropriate court.
Watch out
- Misusing or abusing a part loses the warranty on that part.
- A garage may not quote or charge more than it usually would for the same job just because insurance is paying.
- The garage must offer to give you back the parts it removed, unless you said you did not want them.
Who this covers
- Anyone whose vehicle is repaired: the warranty covers new or reconditioned parts installed and the labour to install them.
