Kenyan citizenship by ancestry, descent or investment: what the law allows
Directorate of Immigration Services · sources read 4 Oct 2026
Kenya has no citizenship-by-investment or ancestry route. You are Kenyan by birth only if your mother or father was Kenyan when you were born; everyone else must qualify for registration, for example after 7 years of lawful residence or 7 years of marriage to a Kenyan.
- Where
- Registration, permits and permanent residence are all applied for online on eFNS (fns.immigration.go.ke), then at Nyayo House, Nairobi
Steps
- Check which route fits you. Kenyan citizenship comes only by birth, by registration, or (for a young child found in Kenya) by presumption.
- Registration covers people such as spouses, widows and widowers of Kenyans, children of registered or adopting Kenyans, lawful residents, stateless persons and migrants.
- If you want to invest or do business in Kenya, apply for a work permit instead, such as Class G for a specific trade or business.
- If your parent is Kenyan but you hold another nationality that bars dual citizenship, or you were born before your parent became Kenyan, look at permanent residence (Category C).
Watch out
- Investing money, even USD 100,000 for a Class G permit, gets you a permit to work and live here, not citizenship.
- Having Kenyan roots, a Kenyan grandparent or a DNA test result is not a route on its own. What counts is a parent who was Kenyan at your birth, or qualifying for registration.
Who this covers
- Citizen by birth: your mother or father was a Kenyan citizen on the day you were born, wherever you were born.
- Registration: a foreigner who has lived lawfully in Kenya for at least 7 continuous years can apply.
- Registration: a foreigner married to a Kenyan citizen for at least 7 years can apply.
