Steps
- Find your plot type and area in the Finance Act land rates schedule: charges are per plot and differ for Maralal Municipality and the rest of the county.
- Pay only through an authorized county channel, such as an officer appointed to collect county revenue.
- County revenue officers carry a county ID card. Ask to see it before you pay.
- Get an official county receipt for every payment and keep it.
Watch out
- Paying plot rent on a county lease? Paying after the due date adds a 15% penalty on the amount due.
- Only people appointed by the county may collect county money. Never pay anyone else.
- If you get a written demand for unpaid rates, you have 60 days to pay before the county can act.
- Rates left unpaid after a demand can end with the county auctioning the property.
- If the county charges simple interest on late rates, the national law caps it at the Central Bank rate.
Who can apply
- Owners of land or buildings in Samburu County, including holders of leases with 21 years or more left
- In some cases the person occupying the property is the one who pays
