Register as a pyrethrum grower, dealer or processor

Agriculture and Food Authority - Miraa, Pyrethrum and Other Industrial Crops Directorate · sources read 2 Oct 2026

Pyrethrum farmers register with a licensed processor and sign a contract to sell their flowers to it. A processor needs AFA registration and then a processor licence (KSh 250,000, renewed at KSh 100,000), applied for on AFA IMIS.

Where
Farmers: at a licensed pyrethrum processor. Dealers and processors: AFA's Miraa, Pyrethrum and Other Industrial Crops Directorate, online on AFA IMIS (imis.afa.go.ke).
Go to AFA

What you need

  • Processors: certificate of incorporation
  • Processors: valid KRA tax compliance certificate
  • Processors: title deed for the site
  • Processors: project feasibility report (for the licence)

Steps

  1. Farmers: register with a licensed processor and sign a contract to deliver your flowers to them.
  2. Dealers: apply to AFA every year for a dealer certificate of registration.
  3. Processors: apply for a processor registration certificate on AFA IMIS (imis.afa.go.ke).
  4. Get a letter of no objection, build the plant, then tell AFA when you are ready for inspection.
  5. Pay KSh 250,000 for the processor licence and collect it on IMIS.

Watch out

  • Once contracted, a farmer may sell flowers only to that processor, and the same land can't be registered with two processors.
  • The letter of no objection lasts one year and can be renewed only once, so finish the plant in time.
  • Before a processor licence is issued, AFA publishes a gazette notice for 30 days so the public can raise queries.

Who can apply

  • Farmers: register with a licensed pyrethrum processor, not with AFA directly.
  • Dealers: people who collect, transport, store or buy flowers for a licensed processor.
  • Processors: anyone who wants to extract or process pyrethrum flowers or products.
