Sacco Societies Regulatory Authority · sources read 4 Oct 2026
Not yet in practice. The Sacco Societies Act sets up a Deposit Guarantee Fund that covers deposits (not shares) up to KSh 100,000 per member, but SASRA's 2025 report says a 2025 Bill is still needed to make the fund work.

Steps
- Before you save, check your SACCO is on SASRA's list of licensed SACCOs.
- Know which of your money is deposits and which is shares. The law only covers deposits, up to KSh 100,000 per member.
- Under the Act, if a SACCO becomes insolvent, members lodge a claim for protected deposits with SASRA, once the fund is running.
Watch out
- SASRA says the fund isn't operating yet: the Sacco Societies (Amendment) Bill, No. 32 of 2025 seeks to make it work. Under the Bill, payouts would start only once the fund has built up enough money.
- Your deposits first pay off any loan you owe the SACCO, and loans you guaranteed, before you get anything.
Who this covers
- Members of SACCOs: the law covers each member's deposits, not shares, up to KSh 100,000.
