Store grain in a certified warehouse and use the warehouse receipt to sell or borrow
Warehouse Receipt System Council · sources read 2 Oct 2026
Deposit your produce in a WRSC-certified warehouse and you get a warehouse receipt that proves you own it. You can then sell the receipt or use it as security for a loan; registering the receipt costs KSh 100.
- Fee
- KSh 100Registering the warehouse receipt
- Where
- A WRSC-certified warehouse near you. WRSC office: Tea House, Naivasha Road, off Ngong Road, Nairobi (0700 368 368, info@wrsc.go.ke)
Steps
- Take your produce to a certified warehouse and deposit it.
- The warehouse gives you a receipt showing the type, quantity and quality of your produce. It is your proof of ownership.
- Use the receipt: sell it to a buyer, or take it to a participating bank or SACCO to get a loan or farm inputs.
- Repay the loan with interest, then collect your produce or keep it stored until prices improve.
Watch out
- The KSh 100 is only for registering the receipt. The warehouse charges separately for drying, weighing, grading and storage, at rates you agree with them.
- A lender usually gives only part of the produce's value, for example 70-80%.
- The produce stays yours until it is sold.
Who can apply
- Farmers, traders and agribusinesses.
- Covered produce: cereals and pulses (maize, beans, rice, green grams) and coffee.
