Submit a historical land injustice claim to the NLC
National Land Commission · sources read 2 Oct 2026
Lodge your claim with the National Land Commission on Form NLC/HLI/01, or by letter, memorandum or word of mouth at an NLC office, with any supporting documents. It must be about an injustice between 1895 and August 2010 that displaced you, and you should first confirm NLC is accepting new claims.
- Fee
- We couldn't confirm a fee from the official page. Check it there before you pay.
- Where
- NLC head office, 316 Upperhill Chambers, 2nd Ngong Avenue, Nairobi (0111042800, info@landcommission.go.ke), or an NLC county office
What you need
- Your claim with your name, address and location, a description of the land (parcel number if you have it), what happened and when
- Names and details of witnesses you want to call
- Any documents that support your claim
Steps
- Lodge the claim on Form NLC/HLI/01, or by letter, memorandum or oral submission at an NLC office or venue the Commission names.
- Say who you are, which land, what happened and when, who the other side is, what you have tried before, and the remedy you want. Attach supporting documents.
- NLC registers the claim, checks whether it can be admitted, investigates and then issues a determination with recommendations.
- If you disagree with the decision, ask NLC to review it or appeal to the Environment and Land Court.
Watch out
- The law gives a time limit for lodging these claims, and an extension was still waiting for presidential assent in late 2025. Call NLC (0111042800) to confirm it is taking new claims before you file.
- NLC's new rules for these claims were still a draft under public consultation in September 2026, so details may change.
- NLC may call for claims through a national newspaper, its website and local radio, so watch for these notices.
Who can apply
- Injustices that pushed people off land where they lived, between 15 June 1895 and August 2010, and that are still not resolved.
- You (or your group) owned or lived on the land the claim is about.
