The NSSF pensionable age is 60, and you can choose early retirement from age 50. In the public service, retirement is compulsory at 60, or 65 for persons with disabilities registered with the national disability council.

Steps

  1. At 60, or from 50 if you choose early retirement, you can claim your NSSF retirement pension.
  2. Go to your nearest NSSF office with a certified retirement letter, certificate of service or termination letter, your NSSF card, ID and bank details.
  3. Public servants claim their pension from the National Treasury Pensions Department; a pension needs at least 10 years' service and age 50.

Watch out

  • NSSF pays a pension, not all cash: you can take at most one third of your Tier II savings as a lump sum.
  • The age 65 rule for persons with disabilities applies only if you are registered with the national disability council.

Who this covers

  • NSSF: every employee aged 18 or over is a member until the pensionable age of 60.
  • Public servants: retirement at 60, or 65 for persons with disabilities registered with the national disability council.
