Can you kill a wild animal that attacks your crops or livestock?

Kenya Wildlife Service · sources read 4 Oct 2026

The owner or occupier of land may destroy a wild animal that is harming people or property (a "problem animal"), but never inside a protected area and never with poison, pitfalls or snares. You can also call KWS free on 0800 597 000, any time, to deal with it.

Deadline
When a KWS officer kills a problem animal, the kill must be reported and the trophies (such as tusks or skin) handed to the nearest wildlife office or police station within 48 hours. The Act sets this duty for kills by authorised officers, not for landowners acting under their own right.

Steps

  1. Call the KWS toll-free line, 0800 597 000. It runs 24 hours.
  2. An authorised KWS officer may come onto your land, with your consent if it is private land, to destroy the problem animal.

Watch out

  • The law never allows killing a problem animal inside a protected area, or using poison, a pitfall or a snare.
  • Killing or wounding a wild animal in self-defence, or to protect someone else, is lawful only if it is immediately and absolutely necessary, and you must prove it.
  • Otherwise, killing wildlife without a KWS permit or licence is a crime.
  • Killing or injuring a wild animal without a permit, outside the problem-animal and self-defence rules, carries a fine of at least KSh 1 million, at least 12 months in prison, or both. Endangered species carry heavier penalties.
  • Poisoning wildlife is a separate offence: a fine of at least KSh 5 million, at least 5 years in prison, or both.

Who this covers

  • The owner or occupier of the land, or their agent.
  • Only for a "problem animal": a wild animal that has caused or is causing damage or harm to human life or property.
