Change your electricity tariff (lifeline, domestic or commercial)

Kenya Power and Lighting Company · sources read 2 Oct 2026

To move from a commercial to a domestic tariff, go to your nearest Kenya Power office and ask the engineer or customer service in charge; they change it after a site visit. You get the cheaper lifeline tariff automatically once your use averages under 30 units over three months.

Fee

Where
At your nearest Kenya Power office; check your tariff on *977# or 97771
Go to KPLC

Steps

  1. Find out which tariff you are on: dial *977# or call Kenya Power on 97771.
  2. Commercial tariff on a home: visit your nearest Kenya Power office and speak to the engineer or customer service in charge.
  3. Kenya Power visits your premises to check your connection and account before changing the tariff.
  4. For lifeline: keep your use below an average of 30 units over three months. Kenya Power moves you on its next review.

Watch out

  • Every new connection starts on the domestic ordinary tariff and is adjusted after about 3 months of use.
  • Lifeline doesn't follow you when you move house. The new account is judged on its own use.
  • Living off-grid doesn't mean a higher tariff: customers in the same category pay the same tariff everywhere.

Who can apply

  • Lifeline tariff: homes whose use averages under 30 units over three months.
