Check if a law school or law degree is licensed (Council of Legal Education)
Council of Legal Education · sources read 4 Oct 2026
Before you enrol for law, check the Council of Legal Education's licensing list on cle.or.ke: only the schools, campuses and programmes on it are licensed. The list as at 31 August 2026 has 22 LLB programmes, including Mount Kenya University's Parklands campus.
- Fee
- KSh 10,000Recognition of a foreign law degree (to join the ATP)
- Where
- Online at cle.or.ke (Institutional Licensing Status page). CLE offices: Karen Office Park, Karen, Nairobi.
Steps
- Open the Institutional Licensing Status page on cle.or.ke and download the newest list.
- Find the exact school, campus and programme. The list names campuses, for example Mount Kenya University School of Law - Parklands Campus for the LLB.
- Read the status column: a 'licence valid until' date is good. Programmes under 'pending applications' are still waiting for a Council decision.
- Studied law abroad? Apply to CLE to have your degree recognised before you can join the Advocates Training Programme.
Watch out
- Licences last 5 years and the list changes. Check the newest list, not an old screenshot or a school's advert.
- A university charter alone is not enough: law programmes are accredited jointly by CLE and the Commission for University Education.
- Diploma in law programmes have their own list, separate from LLB degrees.
Who can apply
- Anyone choosing a law degree (LLB), master's (LLM) or diploma in law, and parents or sponsors checking a school.
