Check the official CBK exchange rates (KES)

Open the Foreign Exchange Rates page on centralbank.go.ke to see CBK's daily indicative KES rates (mean, buy and sell) for the dollar, euro, pound and other currencies. These are a guide to the shilling's value; banks and forex bureaus set their own rates.

Steps
- Go to centralbank.go.ke, then Rates, then Foreign Exchange Rates.
- In the Daily KES Exchange Rates table, find your currency and date. Each row shows a mean, a buy and a sell rate in Kenya shillings.
- Need past rates? Use Download All Historical Rates or the yearly datasets on the same page.
- For monthly average and end-of-month rates, use Statistics, then Exchange Rates.
Watch out
- CBK does not set the exchange rate. It is set by supply and demand, and each bank and forex bureau sets its own rate, so what you get at the counter will differ from the CBK figure.
- CBK says small amounts usually get better rates at forex bureaus, while large amounts through foreign currency accounts usually get better rates at banks.
- Read the currency names carefully: Japanese yen is quoted per 100 yen, and Uganda and Tanzania shillings are listed as KES/USHS and KES/TSHS.
Who can apply
- Anyone. CBK compiles these rates daily for use by the general public.
