Claim your deposits after a bank collapses (KDIC payout)
Kenya Deposit Insurance Corporation · sources read 2 Oct 2026
If the Central Bank puts your bank in liquidation, KDIC pays you up to KSh 500,000 per bank. Download your bank's claim form from KDIC, fill it in and attach copies of your ID and KRA PIN.
- Fee
- We couldn't confirm a fee from the official page. Check it there before you pay.
- Where
- KDIC, UAP Old Mutual Towers, Upper Hill, Nairobi; claim forms on the KDIC website
What you need
- The protected depositor claim form for your bank (from the KDIC website)
- Individuals: copy of your ID or passport and copy of your KRA PIN certificate
- Companies: certificate of incorporation, a signed letter of authority, signatories' IDs and the company PIN certificate
- Deposits above KSh 500,000: a sworn affidavit before a commissioner of oaths
Steps
- Check that your bank has been placed in liquidation. KDIC pays only at that stage, not while the bank is under receivership.
- Download the protected depositor claim form for your bank from KDIC's 'Lodge a Claim' page.
- Fill in your deposits and any loans with the bank, give a bank account for the payment, sign and attach your documents.
- Lodge the claim with KDIC. If you live outside Kenya, you can lodge online with notarised supporting documents.
Watch out
- Have a loan with the failed bank? In liquidation the whole balance plus interest becomes payable at once, so talk to KDIC about a repayment plan.
- Nobody can claim for you unless they hold a registered power of attorney.
- Money above KSh 500,000 is paid later, only as the bank's assets are recovered. All your accounts in one bank count as one claim.
Who can apply
- Depositors of commercial banks, mortgage finance institutions and microfinance banks licensed by the Central Bank of Kenya.
- Cover is up to KSh 500,000 per depositor in each bank. It costs you nothing; banks pay the premium.
