Get a DCI motor vehicle examination (inspection)
Directorate of Criminal Investigations · sources read 2 Oct 2026
Take the vehicle and your documents to DCI headquarters or a county or sub-county DCI office with Crime Scene Investigation officers. You need this examination for a change of body, engine or colour, a lost logbook or number plate, deregistration, verification, forced transfer or double registration.
- Fee
- We couldn't confirm a fee from the official page. Check it there before you pay.
- Where
- In person at DCI headquarters or a county or sub-county DCI Scenes of Crime office
What you need
- Original and copy of the logbook (or copy of records)
- Your ID or passport and a copy
- An affidavit (for most cases, except plain verification)
- Lost logbook or number plate: a police abstract
- Engine change: the engine importation documents
- Deregistration and re-registration: a request letter
Steps
- Check which case is yours (change of particulars, lost logbook or plate, deregistration, verification, forced transfer or double registration) and gather the documents for it.
- Go to DCI headquarters, or a county or sub-county DCI office that has Crime Scene Investigation officers.
- Officers take a tapelift of the chassis and engine numbers. NTSA uses it to process your logbook change, so bring the vehicle.
Watch out
- For a lost logbook or number plate, report the loss to the police first and get an abstract. DCI asks for it.
- A forced transfer (for example after an auction) needs more papers: the original logbook, discharge letter, affidavit, certificate of sale and auctioneering documents.
Who can apply
- Vehicle owners who need a change of particulars (body, engine or colour), a new logbook or number plate after loss, deregistration and re-registration, verification, a forced transfer of ownership, or to fix double registration.
