Get a plant, soil, fertiliser or pesticide-residue test at a KEPHIS lab

Request a test on KEPHIS's lab services form, then bring your sample, sign a client contract and pay. A soil fertility test costs KSh 2,500 and takes about 10 days; farmers can bring diseased plants for diagnosis.

What you need
- Soil test: at least 1 kg of soil
- Irrigation water test: at least 1 litre of water
- Pesticide residue test: at least 1 kg of small produce like French beans
- Plant disease test: the affected roots, fruits, stems, tubers or leaves
Steps
- Fill in the 'Accredited Lab Services' request form on the KEPHIS website and pick the test you need. KEPHIS staff will contact you.
- Hand in your sample, sign the client contract and pay.
- Get your report. Disease reports come with a practical recommendation on what to do.
Watch out
- Disease and pest tests are charged per sample per pest, and take 10 to 30 days depending on the test (fungal tests: 20 days).
- Fertiliser, compost, manure and plant tissue tests cost KSh 800 to 14,000 depending on how many things are tested.
- If KEPHIS staff come to you, expect extra charges for transport (KSh 90.55 per km) and allowances.
Who can apply
- Anyone, including farmers: the labs take samples from farmers as well as from KEPHIS inspectors.
