Apply and pay on KenTrade's Trade Facilitation Platform before the goods ship, then download the permit there. Meat and meat products (VS13) cost KSh 3,000; animal feeds (VS10) cost KSh 3,000 plus KSh 50 and need a risk assessment first.

What you need
- Proforma invoice for the consignment
- Certificate of analysis for the product
- Animal feeds: the questionnaire for animal feeds (for the risk assessment)
- Veterinary biologicals: certificate of retention of the veterinary medicine and a commercial invoice
Steps
- Animal feeds only: start with a risk assessment, filling in the questionnaire for animal feeds.
- Log in to KenTrade's Trade Facilitation Platform, apply for the import permit, generate an e-slip and pay.
- Download the approved import permit from the same platform.
- Meat: ask the veterinary inspecting officer for permission to clear the goods at least 24 hours before they arrive in Kenya.
Watch out
- If inspectors condemn a meat consignment, you have 48 hours to re-export it or hand it over for disposal at your cost.
- Veterinary biologicals also carry a verification fee of 0.75% of the FOB value, on top of the KSh 1,000 processing fee.
- Veterinary biologicals are handled under the Veterinary Medicines Directorate rules, not the DVS animal product permits.
Who can apply
- Anyone bringing meat or meat products into Kenya. No one may import them without a valid permit.
- Veterinary biologicals: only holders of a wholesale veterinary medicines dealer permit.
