National livestock vaccination campaign and animal ID tagging
Directorate of Veterinary Services, State Department for Livestock Development · sources read 4 Oct 2026
Bring your cattle, sheep and goats when county vaccinators reach your area: cattle get the foot-and-mouth (FMD) vaccine, sheep and goats get the PPR vaccine. The national campaign began in January 2025, runs for three years and reaches areas in phases, so ask your county veterinary office for your date.
- Fee
- We couldn't confirm a fee from the official page. Check it there before you pay.
- Where
- Through your county veterinary office. Questions can also go to the Director of Veterinary Services at infodvs@kilimo.go.ke.
Steps
- Ask your nearest county veterinary office when the campaign reaches your area.
- On the scheduled day, bring your cattle, sheep and goats to the vaccination point.
- Keep sick animals back and report them to the vet for treatment instead.
- Vaccinate again on schedule: FMD twice a year for cattle, PPR once a year for sheep and goats.
Watch out
- It isn't promised free everywhere: costs are shared, and livestock keepers may be asked to contribute. Ask your county vet office.
- Areas are reached in phases based on disease risk, so your neighbours' county may be done before yours.
- Rules for digital animal IDs and ear tags are in the Animal Identification and Traceability Bill, 2026. Check with your county vet office whether tagging has started where you are.
Who can apply
- Anyone keeping cattle, sheep or goats.
- All regions of Kenya, with high-risk and border areas first.
