Get Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) status with KRA

AEO is KRA's trusted-trader programme that gives faster, priority customs clearance. Companies incorporated in Kenya for over 3 years submit the AEO application form with their procedures and 3 years of financial statements; KRA reviews it and visits your site before certifying.

What you need
- AEO application form, fully filled, stamped and signed
- Certificate of incorporation, company PIN certificate, and memorandum and articles of association
- Audited and signed financial statements for the last 3 years
- Tax compliance certificates for the company and directors
- Directors' certificates of good conduct
- Company policies and procedures: HR policy, organisation structure, code of conduct, safety and security, and internal controls
- Customs agent licence, where applicable
Steps
- Put the AEO compliance procedure in place: written operating procedures, staff training, internal audit, risk assessment.
- Download the AEO application form from kra.go.ke, fill, stamp and sign it, and submit it with the documents listed to KRA Customs & Border Control.
- KRA reviews your documents and carries out an on-site validation visit.
- An AEO examining committee considers the report, then KRA issues the AEO certification.
Watch out
- AEO status lasts 3 years, then you renew.
- Handing in the form doesn't mean you're accepted. KRA can also cancel your AEO status at any time.
- There are two types: national AEO (Kenya only) and East African regional AEO, recognised across the EAC.
Who can apply
- Bonded warehouses, transporters and carriers, clearing agents, and importers or exporters
- Your business must be incorporated in Kenya and have operated for over 3 years
- You must be compliant and financially solvent
