What you need

  • Copy of your national ID or alien ID
  • A clear passport-size photo
  • Certified copies of your film training certificates and proof of 2 years' experience, or a portfolio of your work
  • If informally trained: recommendation letters from past employers or clients
  • Trainees: valid student ID and a signed, stamped letter from your Head of Department
  • Organisations: certificate of incorporation or registration, organisation profile, and registered office address and email

Steps

  1. Sign in to eCitizen and open KFC's E-Film Shop (efilmshop.ecitizen.go.ke), then choose 'Coordination and Certification'.
  2. Fill in the form, select your category (local/resident, foreign or trainee) and upload your documents.
  3. KFC reviews your application. If they need clarification, they'll ask within 5 working days.
  4. If approved, you get a Professional Identity Card (or a Certificate of Compliance for associations and organisations).
  5. Renew every year with a renewal form. If you don't renew for a year, you're removed from the register.

Watch out

  • Foreign filmmakers can't apply directly. A certified local film agent applies for them before they arrive.
  • False documents or misleading information get your application rejected.
  • Everyone certified must commit to Kenya's professional filmmakers' Code of Conduct.

Who can apply

  • Individual filmmakers (local or resident, foreign, and trainees), film associations and guilds, and organisations in Kenya's film industry.
  • Local filmmakers: formally trained in film (certificate, diploma, degree) with 2 years' experience, or informally trained with a portfolio of work.
  • Associations and guilds need at least 30 members.
  • Organisations include production companies, film agents, talent and casting agencies, and film training institutions.
