What you need

  • Application on the prescribed form, sent to the sub-county committee

Steps

  1. Fill in the prescribed application form and send it to the alcoholic drinks committee of the sub-county where your premises are. Pay the KSh 1,000 application fee.
  2. Within 21 days the committee puts up a notice listing your application. It goes to the sub-county office, your premises, the police and the public health and planning officers.
  3. The sub-county committee decides on your application and sets the licence conditions.
  4. Pay the licence fee for your type of business and area. A bar in an urban centre pays KSh 18,000.

Watch out

  • Paying the licence after 31 March attracts a 5% late-payment penalty.
  • A general retail (bar) licence lets you sell only from 5pm to 11pm on weekdays, and 2pm to 11pm on weekends and public holidays.
  • If you applied to renew and the committee hasn't decided by the expiry date, your old licence stays valid until it does.

Who can apply

  • Anyone who wants to make, import, distribute or sell alcoholic drinks in Bungoma County, including bars, restaurants, wines and spirits shops and supermarkets.
