Steps

  1. Apply to the County Government of Busia for a licence to sell liquor and pay the KSh 1,000 application fee.
  2. Pay the licence fee for your type of business and area. A bar in a large urban area outside a municipality pays KSh 30,000 a year.
  3. The county's E-Services Portal (BusiaPay) handles county payments online.

Watch out

  • A bar also has a separate county permit to operate in the trade schedule: KSh 1,000 to apply, then KSh 10,000 a year in a municipality.
  • You can take a licence for 6 months or less. A bar in a municipality then pays KSh 30,000 instead of KSh 50,000.
  • A one-off event needs a temporary licence, at KSh 1,000 per day.

Who can apply

  • Anyone who wants to sell or deal in liquor or alcohol in Busia County.
