What you need

  • To open the account: your national ID number and first name (personal account), or the business registration number and full business name (business account), plus your mobile number and email

Steps

  1. Sign up on the Mombasa County eServices portal with your national ID or your business registration number.
  2. From the dashboard, choose Business Permit and apply. Outdoor advertising and liquor licences are applied for here too.
  3. Upload the documents asked for and track your application online. You get an alert when it is approved.
  4. Pay online by M-Pesa, Airtel Money, debit or credit card, or Pesalink bank transfer.
  5. Print your receipt and your permit from the portal.

Watch out

  • Keep the permit clearly displayed at your business premises at all times.
  • The fee depends on where your business is and how big it is: a small shop with up to 4 staff pays KSh 4,000 a year, plus a KSh 200 application fee. Pick the right category when you apply.
  • Pay only through official channels (the county bank account or paybill). A real county revenue collector wears a county ID card.

Who can apply

  • Anyone running a business or service in Mombasa County needs a valid county licence or permit.
