What you need

  • Application on the prescribed form, sent to the sub-county committee

Steps

  1. Get the liquor licence application form (KSh 3,000), fill it in and send it to the alcoholic drinks committee of the sub-county where your premises are.
  2. Within 21 days the committee posts a notice listing your application and the hearing date. Police, public health and planning officers report on your premises.
  3. If there is no objection, the committee recommends you to the county alcoholic drinks board, which grants the licence once you pay the fee.
  4. Pay the yearly fee for your type and size of outlet. A small bar in the municipality pays KSh 35,000.

Watch out

  • Late payment attracts a penalty of 50% of the liquor fee.
  • A bar licence lets you sell only from 5pm to 11pm on weekdays, and 2pm to 11pm on weekends.
  • A licence granted from 1 July runs only to 30 June, not to December.

Who can apply

  • Anyone who wants to brew, make, import, repackage, distribute or sell alcoholic drinks in Trans Nzoia County, including bars, restaurants, wines and spirits shops, supermarkets and clubs.
