Get resettlement and aftercare support after release from prison or borstal
Probation and Aftercare Service · sources read 3 Oct 2026
After release from prison, borstal or a psychiatric hospital, contact your probation officer straight away. PACS aftercare is free: the officer helps you settle back home and may recommend deserving cases for school support or work tools.
- Fee
- FreeResettlement and reintegration (aftercare)
- Where
- Your nearest probation office. PACS has offices in every county and sub-county; head office is Reinsurance Plaza, Taifa Road, Nairobi.
What you need
- Your release paper: court order, Presidential Release Warrant, Board of Visitors licence or Discharge Board warrant
Steps
- Before release, a probation officer assesses you, the victim and your community to prepare a reintegration plan. Family can help by being open with the officer.
- Right after you are released, contact your probation officer. They will explain your order or licence in detail.
- Keep in regular contact with your probation officer as agreed in your supervision plan, and tell them where you live and how you support yourself.
- Ask about extra help. In deserving cases the officer may recommend education support, or tools if you did vocational training.
Watch out
- If you avoid supervision, the probation officer will apply for your arrest.
- Kenya does not run parole. Aftercare is support after release, not early release.
- You don't have to go to Nairobi. There are probation offices in every county and sub-county.
Who can apply
- People released from a prison, borstal institution or psychiatric hospital, whether on a licence or executive order or after finishing their sentence.
- Long-term prisoners who have completed their sentence can get voluntary aftercare supervision.
