Lease your building to a government ministry or agency
State Department for Lands and Physical Planning · sources read 3 Oct 2026
The ministry or agency that wants your premises asks the Ministry of Lands' Valuation department to set a fair rent; you give them your ownership documents, plans of the lettable space and your asking rent. The assessment is free under the 2025 charter and takes about 21 days.
- Fee
- We couldn't confirm a fee from the official page. Check it there before you pay.
- How long
- About 21 days
- Where
- Through the renting ministry or agency, which writes to the Directorate of Valuation, Ardhi House, Nairobi
What you need
- A request letter from the ministry or agency (MDA) renting the premises
- Your ownership documents for the building
- Plans showing the lettable area
- Your asking rent (where applicable) and a contact person
Steps
- Agree in principle with the ministry or agency that wants your premises. They send a formal request to the Valuation department; you do not apply on your own.
- Give the agency your ownership documents, plans of the lettable area, your asking rent and a contact person to send with the request.
- The housing directorate inspects the premises.
- Government valuers set the rent based on market rates, the building's condition and local rents. The lease is then agreed at that figure.
Watch out
- The government pays a valuer-assessed market rent, not simply your asking rent, so price close to local rates.
- The valuation only starts once the ministry or agency sends its request letter, so follow up with them, not the Ministry of Lands.
Who can apply
- Private owners whose premises the government wants to rent
