Leave TSC service: retirement or resignation

TSC teachers retire at 60, and TSC sends a retirement notice two years before: send the documents it lists, your bank details and clear your tax with KRA. To resign, give three months' written notice or pay one month's basic salary instead; resigning does not earn a pension.

What you need
- Retirement: all the documents listed in your retirement notice
- Retirement: the bank forms, with full details of your bank account
- Resignation: a written resignation notice (three months), or one month's basic salary in place of notice
Steps
- Retiring at 60: wait for the retirement notice from TSC, sent two years before your retirement date (sometimes shorter).
- When you get it, quickly send all the documents listed in the notice and fill in your full bank account details on the bank forms.
- Choose how much of your pension to commute (take as a lump sum), up to a quarter.
- Confirm your tax status with KRA and settle any tax you owe.
- Use Pension Status on the TSC website (tsc.go.ke) to see whether your pension claim has been delivered to the Treasury.
Watch out
- Resigning does not earn pension benefits. A male teacher who resigns or is dismissed can claim a WCPS refund by writing to TSC.
- Clearing your tax with KRA is part of TSC's retirement checklist, so check your KRA status as soon as the notice arrives.
Who can apply
- Retirement: teachers who reach 60 years.
- Resignation: teachers on permanent and pensionable terms can resign at any time with notice.
- Medical grounds: a teacher may ask to retire, or be retired, on medical grounds after a medical board assessment.
