Judiciary of Kenya · sources read 1 Oct 2026
Pay the fine or cash bail the court set at the court registry; the court charges nothing extra to process it. Keep the original receipt: you need it to get cash bail back when the case ends.
- Fee
- FreeCourt charge to process your cash bail or fine (the bail or fine amount itself is set by the court)FreeCourt charge to refund cash bail
- How long
- About 10 minutes at the registry (High Court service standard)
- Where
- At the registry of the court handling your case; in Nairobi, cash bail refunds are handled at the Court Customer Service Centre, Milimani Law Courts
What you need
- To get cash bail back: a formal application, the original receipt, proof of identification and your bank details
- For a bond with a surety: the security with a valuation report, a verification report and the surety's proof of identification
Steps
- At the court registry, make the application and deposit the cash bail or pay the fine the court ordered.
- Courts take cash bail through mobile money and agency banking, not cash in hand. Use only the payment details the court registry gives you.
- If the court allowed a bond with a surety instead, the surety brings the security and its reports to the registry for approval.
- When the case is over, apply at the registry for your cash bail refund with the original receipt, ID and bank details.
Watch out
- Cash bail is not a fine. It is refundable once your case is concluded, so keep the original receipt safe.
- Court staff must not ask you for extra payments. Pay only the amount the court ordered.
Who can apply
- Fines: a person who admitted the charge or was tried and convicted. Cash bail: an accused person released to attend court
