Steps

  1. Land rates are charged every year on your plot and are paid to the County Government of Kakamega through KCRA (revenue.kakamega.go.ke).
  2. Know the rate: your bill is worked out from the county valuation roll. In Kakamega Municipality the rate struck is 0.15% for residential land and 0.17% for commercial and industrial land.
  3. Pay only to genuine KCRA staff. Never hand rates money to anyone else.
  4. Get official proof of payment, such as a Land Rates Clearance Certificate, and keep it safe.

Watch out

  • Kakamega County takes land rates defaulters to court, so don't let arrears pile up.
  • If you get a written demand for unpaid rates, you have 60 days to pay before the county can act.
  • Rates left unpaid after a demand can end with the county auctioning the property.
  • Late rates attract simple interest at the Central Bank rate, though the interest can never be more than the rates you owe.

Who can apply

  • Owners of land or buildings in Kakamega County, including holders of leases with 21 years or more left
  • In some cases the person occupying the property is the one who pays
