Steps
- Know the rate: land rates are 2% of the current market value of your plot, whether residential, commercial or a large agricultural estate.
- Plots in towns also pay a yearly plot rent, from KSh 800 to KSh 1,500 depending on the zone and use.
- Pay digitally, for example by mobile money or bank transfer. Nyamira County does not accept cash.
- County revenue staff must show a county ID card. Check it before you deal with anyone.
- Demand an official county receipt for every payment and keep it.
Watch out
- If you get a written demand for unpaid rates, you have 60 days to pay before the county can act.
- Rates left unpaid after a demand can end with the county auctioning the property.
- If the county charges simple interest on late rates, the national law caps it at the Central Bank rate.
Who can apply
- Owners of land or buildings in Nyamira County, including holders of leases with 21 years or more left
- In some cases the person occupying the property is the one who pays
