Steps
- Know the rate: land rates are 0.5% of the site value on the valuation roll in Voi, Wundanyi/Mwatate and Taveta sub-counties (down from 2%).
- Town plots also pay a yearly plot rent: KSh 1,500 in Voi CBD, KSh 1,000 in Taveta CBD and Mtito Andei, and KSh 500 in Mwatate and Wundanyi CBD.
- Need proof your plot is clear, for example to sell or transfer it? Ask the Lands section for a clearance certificate (KSh 5,000 per plot).
Watch out
- If you get a written demand for unpaid rates, you have 60 days to pay before the county can act.
- Rates left unpaid after a demand can end with the county auctioning the property.
- If the county charges simple interest on late rates, the national law caps it at the Central Bank rate.
Who can apply
- Owners of land or buildings in Taita Taveta County, including holders of leases with 21 years or more left
- In some cases the person occupying the property is the one who pays
