- Rates are charged every year. The county must announce the payment date in the Kenya Gazette at least 60 days ahead.

Steps
- The county charges temporary occupation licence (T.O.L) rent, rates and property rent on rateable land as set out in the Finance Act schedule.
- Pay only through an authorized county channel, such as an appointed county revenue collector.
- County revenue collectors wear a county ID card where you can see it. Check it before you pay.
- Demand an official receipt for every payment and keep it.
- Need proof you have paid, for example to transfer a plot? Ask for a rates clearance certificate (KSh 3,000).
Watch out
- Rates left unpaid after the due day can attract interest and penalties set by the county.
- If you get a written demand for unpaid rates, you have 60 days to pay before the county can act.
- Rates left unpaid after a demand can end with the county auctioning the property.
- If the county charges simple interest on late rates, the national law caps it at the Central Bank rate.

- Owners of land or buildings in Wajir County, including holders of leases with 21 years or more left
- In some cases the person occupying the property is the one who pays
