Record your trademark with ACA to block fake imports (IPR recordation)

Record your registered trademark or other IP on ACA's AIMS portal (public.aims.aca.go.ke) so border officers can stop fake imports. It costs USD 90 for the first class plus USD 10 per extra class, ACA decides within 30 days, and you renew every year for USD 50.

What you need
- Certified copy of your valid IP registration certificate
- Individuals: certified copy of your passport or ID
- Companies: certified copy of the certificate of incorporation
- Clear photos of every product sold under the brand, including all sizes, models and variations
- Agents: Power of Attorney on Form ACA 15, stamp duty paid and certified
Steps
- Go to public.aims.aca.go.ke, create an account and confirm it from your email.
- Pick the type of IP, enter its name, registration number and expiry date, and attach a certified copy of the registration certificate.
- Add the product details and upload clear photos of every product under the brand.
- Pay the invoice: USD 90 for the first class and USD 10 for each extra class. You can pay by M-Pesa paybill 682067, using the reference number on the invoice as the account.
- Submit the application. Once approved, the recordation certificate comes by email or on AIMS.
Watch out
- Recording is not registering. Register the trademark first with KIPI (or copyright with KECOBO), then record it with ACA.
- A recordation lasts 12 months. Renew it every year (USD 50) or your brand loses this protection at the border.
- Importing goods that carry a brand not recorded with ACA is an offence, so importers of branded goods should check their suppliers have recorded.
Who can apply
- The owner of a registered trademark, design, patent or copyright, or an agent appointed by power of attorney and admitted by ACA
- Brands made in Kenya can be recorded too. It is voluntary and free for them.
