Register as a patent (industrial property) agent with KIPI

Fill Form IP 40, pay the KSh 10,000 application fee on KIPI's eCitizen portal, then hand in the form, receipt and supporting documents to KIPI. You must be a Kenyan citizen living in Kenya, and either a practising advocate or a science or technical graduate who knows industrial property law.

What you need
- Filled Form IP 40 (application for admission to practice)
- Advocates: copies of your degree certificate, national ID, letter or certificate of admission as an advocate, and current practising certificate
- Non-advocates: your degree plus evidence that you know industrial property matters
- The payment receipt downloaded from eCitizen
Steps
- Download Form IP 40 from KIPI's forms page and fill it in.
- On KIPI's eCitizen portal, generate an invoice for admission as an agent and pay the KSh 10,000.
- Submit the form, the eCitizen receipt and your supporting documents to KIPI.
- Every year after the first, pay KSh 2,000 with Form IP 41 to stay on the register. Advocates also send their current practising certificate.
Watch out
- Your admission lapses on its anniversary if you haven't paid the next year's fee. There's no annual fee in your first year.
- Acting as an agent before KIPI without being admitted is an offence: a fine of up to KSh 6,000, up to 6 months in jail, or both.
Who can apply
- Kenyan citizens who live in Kenya, and who are either:
- an advocate practising in Kenya, or
- a university graduate in science or a technical field who knows industrial property matters
