What you need

  • Your own ID document
  • The name of the person who died and the date and place of death, so the registrar can find the record

Steps

  1. Log in to eCitizen, open Civil Registration (crs.ecitizen.go.ke) and choose Replacement Death Certificate.
  2. Fill in the details of the person who died and pay on eCitizen.
  3. Prefer to go in person? Visit any sub-county civil registration office or Huduma Centre with your ID.

Watch out

  • If the details on the certificate are wrong, that is an alteration of the death register, not a replacement. It costs KSh 1,000.
  • If an insurer, bank or other body wants proof the certificate is genuine, CRS can authenticate it. Bring the original and a copy, your ID and the body's letter. Individuals pay KSh 500.

Who can apply

  • Relatives of the person who died, employers and others with an interest, such as estate administrators.
