Replace a lost or damaged birth certificate (get a new copy)
Directorate of Civil Registration Services · sources read 30 Sep 2026
Civil Registration keeps the original birth register, so a new certificate can be issued from your record. Go to a sub-county civil registration office or Huduma Centre with the date of birth, mother's name and place of birth so they can find the entry.
- Fee
- We couldn't confirm a fee from the official page. Check it there before you pay.
- Where
- In person at a sub-county Civil Registration office or a Huduma Centre (CRS headquarters: Hass Plaza, Lower Hill Rd, Nairobi)
What you need
- The date of birth, the mother's name and the place of birth, so the registrar can find the entry
Steps
- Go to a sub-county civil registration office or a Huduma Centre and say you need a new birth certificate because the old one is lost or damaged.
- Give the birth details and pay the fee the office charges. The certificate is compiled from the records and registers CRS holds.
- If an office or embassy wants a certified copy of the register entry instead, ask for a certified copy. It is accepted as evidence of the facts in the register.
Watch out
- A new certificate carries the details as first registered. For example, the place of birth is not updated to today's administrative unit.
- CRS offices open Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm, and are closed on public holidays.
